About the Painting
Sharing the Faith
By Karla Aurora Kozach
The following is a description of the significance of the symbolism depicted in my painting:
-
The Wooden Crosses – Symbol of St. Kateri’s love for the cross and represents the wooden crosses she would often make in the woods while she prayed.
-
White Lilies – Symbol of purity. St. Kateri is known as the Lily of the Mohawks.
-
Monarch Butterfly – Symbol of rebirth.
-
Beadwork – Traditional of the Haudenosaunee. The strawberries symbolize life and health
-
The Wampum Belt – This belt was given as a gift to the Mohawks in Canada from the Christian Hurons in 1677. This was also the year that St. Kateri arrived in Canada. It was displayed over the altar at the St. Francis Xavier Mission Catholic Church in Kahnawake Canada until it was stolen in the 1970’s.
